April Ross
April Ross is only one of the few beach volleyball athletes to win medals at least twice in an Olympics. Ross will compete in Tokyo for her third Olympic medal with Alix Klineman, who is a first time Olympian. Ross's goal is to win her first Olympic gold medal. As she turns 39, it could be her final opportunity to claim the Olympic gold. Nevertheless, she remains confident of achieving top honours. Ross on NBC Boston, said that when the team performs consistently or well they can earn a gold. "I'm also going to try some luck." Ross was born in 1982 in Costa Mesa California where she resided with her parents and her sister. Ross's athletic endeavors began at Newport Harbor High School where she participated in several sports. When she was a student in the prep school she played indoor volleyball along with basketball and running track. While she did well in indoor volleyball, it was clear that her performance was above normal. Based on her bio, she was a middle blocker and outside hitter on the volleyball court during her high-school career. For her efforts she was awarded the 1999 Gatorade International Player of the year in Circle of Champions. Also, in 2000 she was recognized as the Orange County Athlete of the Yr for volleyball. Ross is playing with Klineman since 2017 but her beach game was well-established long before that. She actually won several major championships while playing using two partners, one of which is a volleyball icon. Jennifer Kessy coached her from 2007 to 2013. Ross, the teammate of Kessy's, who took home the title of world champion with Kessy in 2009, also was significant on the international stage. In the 2012 Olympic Games, they won the gold medal. Misty Maytreanor's legendary team as well as Kerri Jennings were the winners of gold. Ross Jennings replaced May-Treanor after she had retired. In 2016, the duo were awarded bronze medals at the Rio Olympics for beach volleyball. Ross played for the Trojans of USC in her college years before becoming a professional. It was a successful run for Ross at the college level. When she was a freshman at the school in 2000 she earned Pac-10 as well as NCAA The Freshman of the Year honors and was an All-American. Additionally, she assisted her Trojans get to the Final Four. She was devastated through a tragedy in her life during her sophomore year. However, she was able to make it an All-American again. During her final two seasons with the Trojans in the program the team was led to success by winning two the national title in consecutive years. Individually she had cemented herself as an all-time great by winning the 2003-2004 Honda Sports Award as the most outstanding female college volleyball player. Ross, an USC international relations major, was a renowned volleyball player. Unfortunately Ross mother Margie was not able to witness Ross rise to the top levels of beach volleyball superstardom. Ross suffered the loss of her mother to breast cancer in the year 2001. Ross was then a sophomore. She has kept her mother in her the heart. Margie is a constant source of inspiration for her at and off the beaches.
